Box Score The No. 15 Maryville College Scots used a strong first half to pull away for a 76-39 USA South road win over Brevard College in North Carolina on Friday evening.
Maryville tallied 18 points off 13 Tornado turnovers to dash to a 38-17 halftime advantage. The Scots pressure defense held Brevard to only a 1-for-15 shooting effort in the first quarter. Kelley Wandell's seven boards helped MC to outpace Brevard 24-13 in rebounds during the first half. The Scots posted the 21-point advantage after sinking 11-of-27 shots (41-percent) including six long-distance baskets.
Maryville extended their lead in the first five minutes of the third quarter with a 14-4 run paced by Jordan Heifner's eight points. MC closed out the third stanza on a 10-5 run to claim a 62-26 lead going into the final period.
The Scots finished strong in the fourth quarter with five different players posting points including five from Audrey Sanders off the bench.
Brevard (1-3, 1-3 USA South) was paced by Destiny William's 10 points on 5-of-15 shooting. Calli Wells added seven points for the Tornados.
Maryville (7-0, 7-0 USA South) had three players post double-digit scoring. Jordan Heifner finished with a game-high 16 points while Courtney Carruthers tossed in 13. Kelley Wandell was dominant in the post with a double-double going for 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
The Scots outpaced Brevard 49-27 on the boards including 17 offensive rebounds. 19 of MC's 22 baskets were assisted displaying the Scots' willingness to distribute on offense. Maryville took advantage of their trips to the charity stripe connecting on 22-of-28 free throws on the evening.
"Our quick start really made a difference for us. I was very pleased with our defensive effort, especially in terms of forcing turnovers and crashing the boards," stated Maryville College Head Coach Darrin Travillian. "Our point distribution was a clear indication of how well we shared the ball tonight. Obviously, we've got to take better care of the ball tomorrow and bring similar energy."
The Scots will return to action on Saturday in Brevard, North Carolina to challenge the Tornados in league action. Tip-off is slated for 2:00.
