MARYVILLE – Sewanee scored an early goal from a takeaway and then added two more midway through the second half to register a 3-0 decision over Maryville here Thursday night.
The Tigers (1-0-0) got on the board in the ninth minute when Will Hawgood picked the pocket of Maryville goalkeeper
Mykal Manfred right at the six-yard box and scored into an empty net. Sewanee's defense held firm the remainder of the opening half, limiting Maryville to eight shots but only two on net.
Sewanee added goals from Payne Gridley and Trevor Reichman in the 72nd and 78th minutes, respectively. Gridley's was a one-timer from distance that slammed into the underside of the crossbar and bounced home, while Reichman chested in a cross from Grant Shepherd right on the doorstep.
Manfred made two saves for the Scots, while Sewanee's JP Furman saved four in his shutout.
The Scots (0-1-0) outshot Sewanee 13-12 and held ball possession for 56 percent of the time. William Brian, Brooklyn Mucillo,
Craig McIlwraith and
Ndubueze Henry all attempted three shots, with
Will Stephens taking the other one.
Maryville is home again Sunday in a 1 p.m. kick against No. 3-ranked Washington & Lee. The Generals (0-1-0) lost 4-1 at home Thursday night to fifth-ranked Messiah.
