Early Scores Don’t Hold at BSC

Host Panthers Rally for 4-2 Outcome

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – William Bryan and Craig McIlwraith handed Maryville an early lead at Birmingham-Southern, but the Panthers rallied for a 4-2 decision in nonconference action Sunday.

Bryan scored his fifth of the season in the fifth minute, and McIlwraith followed with his first of 2022 just 3½ minutes later for a 2-0 Maryville margin. Ndubueze Henry earned the assist on McIlwraith's goal.

But Birmingham-Southern bounced back quickly on goals by Pirmin Blattmann in the 15th minute and Coleman Jennings in the 22nd. The teams were tied 2-2 at intermission.

It was still 2-2 when Blattmann and Jennings struck again for goals in the closing stages. Blattmann scored his second of the match and the season in the 86th minute, and Jennings followed in the 88th minute to seal it. Jennings has nine goals in six BSC matches thus far to rank among the national leaders.

Bryan attempted six shots, with five of those on net. Henry tried three shots and McIlwraith two.

Team shots were dead even, with both squads taking nine in the first half and six in the second for 15-15. The Scots worked their way to a 9-3 edge in corner kicks, and Mykal Manfred made four saves in the net for Maryville.

It's a busy week ahead for the Scots, who host Rhodes in a Tuesday afternoon affair. Kickoff is 2 p.m. Then Maryville is home for the Collegiate Conference of the South opener against LaGrange on Saturday and a nonconference tilt against Greensboro on Sunday.
