MARYVILLE – Maryville struck first in the contest but a 90th-minute penalty goal Sealed the Scots fate as they fell to Berea 2-1 Tuesday night at the MC Soccer Complex.
With the match tied 1-1 with just 30 seconds remaining on the clock, a Maryville foul inside the box resulted in a Berea penalty kick which found the back of the net in the 90th minute of play.
The Mountaineers Joshua Szidik took the PK, firing it into the lower left corner for the game-winning goal.
Hyatt Macdonald kicked off the scoring early for MC in the contest, scoring a goal in the 11th minute on an assist from
Aidan McWilliams to give the Scots an early 1-0 lead. McWilliams played a perfect ball from midfield which MacDonald ran down and blasted past the Mountaineers goalkeeper from 20 yards out.
The first-year forward leads all Maryville scorers with six goals this season. He is tied for third in the conference with Berea's Victor Hernandez. McWilliams' assist marked his fourth of the season, leading MC and good for third in the CCS.
Berea evened the score in the second half, scoring a 63rd-minute goal to tie it up at 1-1.
The game was back and forth from then on, with both goalies making some tremendous saves and neither team being able to gain an advantage until the last-minute penalty goal that secured the victory for the Mountaineers.
Maryville outshot Berea 23-15 but both squads were tied with nine shots on goal. MacDonald led the way for MC with five shots, followed by
Brooklyn Muccillo and
Craig McIlwraith with four apiece. Eight Maryville players fired at least one shot in the contest.
Goalkeeper
Mykal Manfred picked up seven saves, his second most of the season.
The Scots have a week off before returning to action with a CCS matchup on the road against Covenant on Wednesday, October 11. Kick off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
