HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Maryville completed a nice turnaround and won its second straight match with an 8-1 victory against Stevenson on Wednesday night.
The Scots quickly grabbed a couple of doubles wins to take a 2-0 lead.
Eliza Cheshire and
Abby Diggs swept to an 8-0 triumph at No. 2 and then
Mandy Webb and
Abby Smither nearly did the same in an 8-1 thrashing at No. 3.
Maryville's only loss of the evening was a narrow 8-6 decision at No. 1 doubles.
The Scots then got back on the winning trail in singles with
Elizabeth Shwaiko rolling past her opponent at No. 3 in a 6-4, 6-0 score line.
Katelyn Cook took care of No. 1 singles for the Scots with a 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 victory, and then Diggs rallied at No. 2 for a 6-7 (5-7), 6-0, 1-0 (10-4) win to put the match into the win column.
With the outcome decided, the last three matches were played to eight games, and Maryville won all three.
Cheshire prevailed 8-5 in the No. 4 position, and then it was a pair of 8-0 sweeps for both Webb at No. 6 and Smither at No. 5.
Maryville with the win finishes 2-1 during its Spring Break trip to Hilton Head. The Scots are 2-6 overall, while Stevenson from Maryland falls to 2-3. MC opens its first Collegiate Conference of the South season with a home match Saturday at noon against Belhaven (3-3).
