MC Closes Regular Season

Scots Fall at CCS Champs Covenant; Conference Tourney Next

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. – Maryville wrapped up the regular season with a 9-0 loss Saturday at first-place Covenant.

Covenant finished the inaugural run through the Collegiate Conference of the South schedule with a perfect 6-0 mark. Maryville dropped to 7-11 overall and 2-4 in league play.

Seth Green and Ben Wyrick at No. 3 doubles made a run at their match before falling 8-6. The other two doubles matches both went to the host Scots by 8-0 counts.

In singles, Jackson Meyer grabbed an opening set 7-5 before falling 1-6, 0-1 (3-10) to lose his match at No. 4. Kyle Shaver won three games in the first set at No. 2 and Josh Fisher won three games over the two sets at No. 3. Seth Green claimed two games in his opening set at No. 5.

"Playing a strong team like Covenant before the conference tournament helps expose some things for us to go back and work on," Maryville head coach Doug Corbett said. "Plenty of that to do, especially in doubles where we hoped to have a strong effort than we did. Seth and Ben did play a great match at No. 3, pushing a good duo to the end.

"In singles, we played better, highlighted by a tremendous first set from Jackson. I don't think his level dropped much in the second set, his opponent just stepped up to the challenge we gave him. Just need to keep learning from these experiences.

Conference tournament play begins Thursday in Rome, Ga.

"We are excited for the opportunity to have a rematch versus Huntingdon in the conference tournament quarterfinal," Corbett said.
