BEREA, Ky. – Check out that team all alone in second place!
Maryville improved to 4-1 in the Collegiate Conference of the South and 6-8 overall after thumping Berea 7-2 Saturday. The Scots fielded just five team members and had to forfeit two matches, but they swept the remaining seven matches while dropping just one set.
MC has posted four league victories for the first time since 2019. They have CCS matches remaining April 15 at Agnes Scott and April 22 at Covenant.
Elizabeth Shwaiko and
Abby Diggs played at No. 1 doubles and swept to an 8-0 victory.
Katelyn Cook and
Eliza Cheshire won handily at No. 2 by an 8-2 count.
In singles, Shwaiko breezed at No. 3 to a 6-0, 6-0 whitewash and completed her perfect afternoon of not dropping a game. Cook was nearly as impressive at No. 1, winning 6-1, 6-1, and
Abby Smither rolled at No. 5 to a 6-2, 6-1 victory. Diggs prevailed at No. 2 by a 6-0, 6-4 count, and then Cheshire closed it out with a 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 (11-9) triumph at No. 4.
Berea is now 1-11 overall and 1-5 in the CCS.
The Scots are home Tuesday against Johnson (10-10) in a 3 p.m. start.
