MARYVILLE – Returning home for the first time this season, Maryville defeated Emory 12-4 before falling to Wittenberg 11-9 in extra innings Saturday afternoon on Day 1 of the Maryville College Classic.
Megan Ackerman continued her strong start to the 2024 season, picking up her fourth win of the year against the Eagles. The senior pitched a complete game, allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out one batter.
The Johnson City native has allowed just eight earned runs in 30 innings of work, good for a 1.87 ERA. She has walked just 5 batters in her five appearances and has allowed a batting average against of .241.
Against Emory, The Scots used an eight-run fourth inning to run-rule the Eagles, finishing the game in five innings. MC picked up seven hits in the inning, including a grand slam from
Paige Dickinson to pick up the first four runs of the inning.
Dickinson recorded five on the day, going 5-for-8 while driving in a team-high six runs in two games.
Ciera Hudson drove in a run on a single to right field and then
Kaitlin Woodruff followed up her teammate's grand slam with a three-run blast of her own to wrap up the scoring for the Scots.
While the Scots played fewer innings than normal in Game 1, Maryville fans got some extra softball in against Wittenberg in Game 2. MC fell to the Tigers in eight innings, battling back-and-forth all game before allowing three runs in the eighth.
Sara Koonce and
Ryleigh Maples each hit home runs in the game for Maryville while
Brecca Williams and
Paige Dickinson both hit two doubles. Koonce led the squad with four RBI in the contest.
Williams led the Scots offensively on Saturday, picking up five hits and scoring a team-high six runs across the two games.
The Scots combined for six extra-base hits while holding Wittenberg to just one. The Tigers had 15 hits to Maryville's 12 but didn't pick up their lone extra-base knock until Caylee Roe's eighth-inning RBI double to extend Wittenberg's lead to three in extras.
Maryville will face both teams again on Day 2 of the Maryville College Classic Sunday afternoon. They'll battle Wittenberg at 1:30 p.m. before taking on Emory at 4 p.m.
