JACKSON, Miss. – Maryville dropped its Collegiate Conference of the South opener on Saturday by a 6-3 count at Belhaven.
Jackson Meyer and
Jonathan Crane captured singles victories for the Scots. Meyer won a straight sets victory at No. 2 singles 6-4, 6-3, while Crane rallied from a set down to post a 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 triumph at No. 3. Crane also helped the Scots grab a point in doubles when he teamed with
Kaleb Burke for an 8-6 decision at the No. 3 position.
Maryville No. 1 singles player
James Smith lost in three sets by a 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 count. He and Meyer were defeated 8-2 at the No. 1 doubles position.
"Another competitive match today where not getting the doubles lead may have cost us," Scots head coach
Doug Corbett said. "I am impressed by the spirit and how we continue to fight throughout.
"Congrats to Jackson and JC on their big wins! They have had to play high in the lineup, which has been tough at times. But they were great today."
The outcome dropped Maryville record to 0-5 overall and 0-3 in the spring season. The Scots stay in Jackson to take on Millsaps (0-6) on Sunday. Start time is 11 a.m. Central.
