MARYVILLE – Piedmont reached 20 wins for the season with a 9-0 victory against Maryville here Sunday.
The Scots put up a strong effort in four of the six singles matches against the first-place team and defending champion in the Collegiate Conference of the South. The Lions improved to 20-4 overall and 6-0 in league play, while Maryville is now 11-7 and 5-1.
Mia Brown at No. 1 singles fell 6-2, 6-4, while
Katelyn Cook at No. 3 dropped a 6-3, 6-2 decision. At No. 4 singles,
Alyssa Smith fought her way to a 7-5, 6-3 defeat, and
Abby Diggs dropped a 6-3, 6-2 result at No. 5.
In doubles, Cook and
Elizabeth Shwaiko lost 8-3 and Brown and
Josie McRae were defeated 8-1.
Despite the loss, Maryville remains in a tie for second place alongside Covenant. Maryville closes the regular season Saturday at home against Covenant, with the winner taking the second seed in the upcoming CCS tournament. Start time is 2 p.m.
