NCAA Release
MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Maryville's
Clarence McLean is an official qualifier for the NCAA Division III Men's Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Â
McLean qualified in the 100m dash with a top time of 10.46 seconds at the Scots Invitational on April 13. He gets to show his wares when the championships take place starting Thursday in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
Â
"It's definitely a highlight for us and for him," Maryville Director of Track & Field
Kunle Lawson said. "Clarence works hard and implements the things we do in practice, and this is the culmination of that. He believes in it, and it shows.
Â
"For athletes currently in the program and for the athletes we recruit, it shows they can improve and be successful here. This new iteration of Maryville College track and field seeks to continue the rich tradition previously established by those who have competed for the Orange and Garnet."
Â
Lawson is not sure if McLean is the first Scot to compete in the NCAA championships, but he knows it is quite an honor for his runner to be the first since the program was reinstituted one year ago.
Â
"Clarence had potential coming out of high school, but he really showed what was on the horizon last year," Lawson said. "He made an incredible jump last year at the first Lee meet and has continued improving since."
