Scots Play to 2-2 Draw

First-Year Runner Made Collegiate Debut Friday in Chattanooga

BEREA, Ky. – Maryville played Berea to a 2-2 draw Tuesday night in Kentucky.

The Scots (1-0-1) scored twice in the opening half. Jorge Graniel connected on a penalty kick in the 24th minute, and then Hayden Tate tallied just two minutes later off an assist by Craig McIlwraith. It was 2-0 Maryville at intermission.

Berea did its damage over the final 45 minutes. The Mountaineers scored first with a penalty-kick goal by Tobore Takpor in the 60th minute, and then they equalized when Ali Ferguson in the 69th minute scored what Maryville head coach Pepe Fernandez called a "really good long-rang shot."

Shots favored Berea (0-2-1) by a 17-16 count, although Maryville held a 53 percent to 47 percent advantage on ball possession. Maryville put eight shots on target to just three for the home side, which resulted in a 6-1 saves advantage for Mountaineeers goalkeeper Eric Acosta. MC attempted seven corner kicks, including six in the second half.

McIlwraith, Graniel and Brady Hammer got off three shots apiece for the Scots, with two for Tate, two for Ethan Denney and two for Brooklyn Muccillo. Tanner Ricks and Alon Biger split the goalkeeping duties for Maryville, each playing 45 minutes. Biger got the decision and is 0-0-1.

The Scots play again Friday and Saturday in the Maryville College Fall Classic. Friday's schedule has Piedmont (2-0-0) taking on Greenville (0-1-0) out of Illinois at 5:30 p.m., followed by the Scots hosting Southern Virginia (2-0-0) at 7:45.

Saturday, Piedmont and SVU begin play at 4 p.m., with the Maryville-Greenville contest kicking off at 6:15. Admission is free.
