Scots Drop CCS Match at Piedmont

Smith Wins Lone Singles Point in 6-1 Defeat

DEMOREST, Ga. – First-place Piedmont dealt Maryville a 6-1 defeat Saturday in Collegiate Conference of the South action.

James Smith earned a three-set win at No. 1 singles and was a tiebreaker away from winning his No. 1 doubles match alongside Luka Romano. Smith won 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 in singles after dropping a hard-fought 7-6 (7-4) decision with Romano in doubles. Smith is 8-2 this season in dual-match singles, all at the No. 1 position.

Field Myatt was a second-set tiebreaker from taking his No. 3 singles match. Myatt won the first set 6-4 before falling 7-6 (7-3) and 6-2 in Sets 2 and 3. Jonathan Crane played his Piedmont singles opponent to a 7-5 loss in Set 1 before losing his match in straights.

"We have made significant progress against this level of competition," Maryville head coach Doug Corbett said. "Coach Matt Williams was very complimentary toward our program's growth. James had the best win of his career and that is saying something with the number of wins he's had in his time with us.

"I would love to have seen the dynamic of the match had Field closed his out, but he played a strong match today as well. The result was encouraging, and we have a big one with Huntingdon coming up."

The Scots, now 6-5 overall and 0-2 in the CCS, host Huntingdon on Thursday at 2 p.m.
