ATLANTA, Ga. – The Maryville College men's soccer team suffered a 2-1 loss to the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels on Friday evening.
Maryville recorded 12 shots, including seven on target, and earned five corner kicks. Brady Hammer led the Scots with three shots, while Ryan Buie and Nate Riepe added two apiece. Will Gallaher, Ben Brophy, Dane Hammer, Jonathan Case, and Landon Yurisic also recorded attempts. Goalkeeper Tanner Ricks played the full 90 minutes, making four saves while facing 14 shots.
Oglethorpe applied early pressure, recording three shots in the opening minutes before Maryville responded with an on-target attempt from Brady Hammer. The Stormy Petrels continued to threaten, but their next three attempts missed the frame. Following a shot from Brophy, Oglethorpe broke through in the 43rd minute, finding the back of the net to take a 1-0 lead into halftime.
The Scots came out with renewed energy in the second half, as Gallaher and Riepe recorded shots just seconds apart. However, Oglethorpe extended its lead three minutes later with a penalty-kick goal. Maryville nearly found an answer in the 62nd minute, but an offside call halted the attack. The Scots continued to push forward, and in the 66th minute, Case found the back of the net off an assist from Gallaher to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Maryville continued to search for an equalizer, with Dane Hammer and Yurisic recording attempts in the 78th and 81st minutes, respectively. However, neither shot found the back of the net as Oglethorpe held on for the victory.
Maryville returns to action Sunday, Nov. 1, at noon against the Berry Vikings in its final match of the regular season.
