KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Maryville's men's tennis team had an incredible match full of twists and turns against Mississippi University for Women in their first ever match up at Goodfriend Tennis Center, courtesy of The University of Tennessee. Despite strong starts and momentum shifting for the Scots towards the end, MUW eked out a win 3-4 in favor of the owls.
Doubles pushed Maryville in the right direction, starting with a dominant display at the #1 position by Steven Fitzsimmons and James Smith, defeating their opponents 6-1. That positive momentum carried over to the #3 position, led by Jackson Meyer and Benjamin Schneider, clinching the doubles for the Scots with a 6-4 win. Field Myatt and Grant Price also had an incredibly close match at #2, and the Scots carried that momentum over to the singles.
Maryville quickly went up 2-0 in the match with Price routing his opponent 6-0 6-3 at the #2 singles slot, but MUW found a way to claw the score back to 2-2. In the closing parts of the match, Fitzsimmons found his way to a win at the #5 position with a 4-6 7-6 (7-5) 1-0 (10-8) score, but Maryville lost a heartbreaker against a formidable foe.
"The only way we get better in the tense moments of the match is with experience playing in them, so we will gain a lot from this one" Coach Corbett noted.
In their next match, Maryville has their home opener against Hanover College on February 27th at 1 p.m.
