Men’s Tennis Heads into Break With a Win

MARYVILLE, Tenn. - Maryville's men's tennis team faced off against Earlham College on March 14th, the first day of the college's spring break. With limited numbers, Maryville took the win 6-1 and evened the series score to one apiece, sending their squad into the break with momentum.

Doubles was a confident start for the Scots. #2 pair Jackson Meyer and Field Myatt took a commanding win over their opponents with a 6-0 win, and #1 pair Steven Fitzsimmons and James Smith followed that with a 6-3 win to give the Scots the clinch. #3 pair Eli Cauthorn and Grant Price tacked on another win in doubles, taking their match 6-3 to send the Scots into singles on the front foot.

Singles was more of the same: confidence throughout all stages of the match. Smith at #1 singles grabs his 5th win in a row by downing his opponent 6-1 6-3 to put the Scots up 2-0. Closely after, Price gets his 4th win in a row by beating his opponent handily at #2 singles, with a 6-3 6-3 scoreline. With the match in a bit of a lull, Myatt pushes the Scots over the finish line, clinching both his match and the win for the good guys, with a scoreline of 7-6 (7-5) 6-3. Fitzsimmons continues his CCS Rookie of the Year campaign with a 6-4 6-0 win at #4, getting his 6th win in a row and moving to 7-1 on the season. To top it all off for the Scots, Eric Vornhagen fought back from down a set to win his match with a 4-6 6-0 10-6 scoreline, and Meyer played some phenomenal tennis, unfortunately falling in a third set tiebreaker.

With lots of time to rest and focus on improving, the Scots next match will take place on March 28th against Southern Virginia University. Maryville looks to do the same as they did with Earlham by evening the series score.
