Softball Sweeps Wesleyan

MACON, Ga. — Maryville  showcased their dominance in a doubleheader against Wesleyan College (Ga.) on Wednesday, securing victories of 12-4 and 14-3 at the Wesleyan Softball Complex. 

In the first game, Maryville kicked off with a two-run burst in the first inning, but Wesleyan quickly answered back, ending the inning ahead at 3-2. The Scots tied it up in the second with a single run, but the turning point came in the third inning, where Maryville surged ahead with three runs, including a powerful home run from sophomore outfielder Catie Zani, bringing the score to 6-4. Maryville continued to widen the gap, adding another run in the fourth and two in the sixth, making it 9-4. They sealed the deal with a three-run flourish in the seventh, finishing the game with a commanding 12-4 triumph.

In the second game, Maryville took decisive control in the second inning, surging ahead with an impressive eight-run burst. Sydney Dickinson launched a two-run home run to cap the scoring spree, ending the inning at 8-1. The Scots maintained their momentum in the third inning, adding five more runs, with significant contributions from senior infielder Jessica Harris, who notched three hits and three RBIs. Wesleyan managed to score twice, making it 13-3 after three innings. The Scots further extended their lead with another run in the fourth, concluding the game at 14-3.

On the mound in the first game, freshman pitcher Watiyeli Taylor delivered 1 2/3 solid innings, striking out two and allowing just one walk, boasting a WHIP of 0.83. Junior pitcher Tia Stewart dominated with 5 1/3 innings, striking out three and conceding four runs on eight hits, maintaining a WHIP of 1.57. In the second game, freshman pitcher Whitney Carr threw 2 innings, allowing 4 hits and 3 runs, with 1 strikeout and 1 walk, finishing with a WHIP of 2.50. Sophomore pitcher Jacey Goetzinger contributed 2 innings with 3 walks and 1 earned run for a WHIP of 1.50, while Sydney Dickinson closed with 1 inning pitched, allowing just 1 hit and striking out 1, achieving a WHIP of 1.00.

Offensively, in the first game, sophomore infielder Sydney Dickinson led the charge with three hits, including a home run and a triple, driving in four runs. Freshman infielder Emma Blankenship added to the offensive firepower with three hits, featuring a double and a triple, and scored twice. Ryleigh Maples, a senior outfielder, bolstered the attack with two hits, two RBIs, and two runs scored. In the second game, Jessica Harris led the charge with three runs, three hits, and three RBIs, while junior catcher Olivia Harris tallied two runs and three RBIs on two hits. Kaylee Peyret, a sophomore infielder, contributed two runs and two hits.

Maryville College will next take on Franklin College on Tuesday, March 31, at 1 p.m. ET, at the MC Softball Complex in Maryville, Tennessee.
