MARYVILLE, Tenn. - Maryville College Cross Country men's and women's teams had strong performances in their 2026 home meet, with both teams placing second while putting together a day full of personal records.
The women's team put up 42 points and placed second in their first 6K race of the year. The team also posted a 26 minute average time, which was the fifth best team average in school history. Two runners finished in the top ten for Maryville, with
Megan Shinn coming in second with a time of 24:53 and a course PR.
Catherine Money followed in seventh place with a time of 25:27. Seven Scots recorded 6K PRs in the race, including:
Catherine Money (25:27), Madison Adair (26:13),
Charlotte Wilson (26:37),
Madeline Edwards (26:51),
Emma Lathinghouse (27:03),
Ivy Blanton (27:06), and
Jozalynn Phillips (30:11).
Catherine Money stated the following about her team's performance: "the race went really well! I went out at about the pace I normally do but was able to hold onto it better than I have been. At mile two I was sub 14, so I knew it was going to be a good race. Towards the end of the three mile, though, I started to want to slow down cause I was alone, but reminded myself, "don't settle", and it paid off! The women's team is doing a great job of working together and pushing each other this season!!! Today I think that we all did a good job about not letting the nerves get to us and staying confident and just enjoying the race."
The men's team had its first individual race winner since 2017 and placed second as a team, posting a team average of 29:26, which was tied for the fifth best team average in program history. The Scots also had four runners finish in the top ten and scored 37 points.
Tyler Tangel finished in first with a time of 28:05 in the 8k.
James LeNeve followed in sixth with a time of 29:04, while Adyn Elliot (8th, 29:45) and
Erick Trejo (10th 29:53) rounded out the top ten scoring.
Dylan Hall (30:24) and
Erick Trejo (29:53) both recorded 8K PRs in this race.
Following his individual victory,
Tyler Tangel stated, "This race was the first race this season I felt I was showing my true strength. Being at home, I really wanted to push the hills and make up room in the quick areas we had run so many times at practice. As a team, I felt we all had a very good showing on our turf and I think the men's team is looking better than ever, but we still have so much room to improve."
After a very successful race day, the Scots will race again in 2 weeks, October 10th, in the Sand Shark Invitational in Bluffton, S.C.
