David Crawford

  • Title
Assistant Football Coach / Running Backs

David Crawford returned to the Maryville football coaching staff in April 2022 as an assistant coach. He has responsibility for the running backs.

Crawford previously coached the Scots at the receivers position back in 2000 and 2001 seasons under head coach Phil Wilks.

The McMinnville native arrived for his second go-round with a storied career of coaching stops, most recently at Greeneville High School since 2016. He helped the Greene Devils to Class 4A state championships in 2017 and 2018 as run game coordinator and running backs coach, along with duties as the punt team coordinator. Crawford then was promoted to offensive coordinator for the 2020 and 2021 seasons, and Greeneville produced the highest scoring average in all classifications at 54.1 in 2020 and 51.1 in 2021.

Previous stops found Crawford at Tusculum from 2014-16, Jefferson County from 2012-13 and Carson-Newman from 2008-12. After his initial stop at Maryville College, he was the head coach first at Mt. Juliet from 2002-06 and then at Cocke County from 2006-07.

Crawford helped Carson-Newman sport the fifth-best rushing unit in the nation in 2011, while also leading the South Atlantic Conference in net punting. In 2010, Carson-Newman finished second in the nation in rushing and sixth in net punting, just one year after advancing to the 2009 NCAA Division II playoff semifinals.

Recruiting has been a Crawford mainstay during his collegiate tenures. He recruited and signed eight in 2009, 16 in 2010, 26 in 2011, 36 in 2012, 18 in 2014 and 24 in 2015. He has coached five NFL players and 52 college All-Conference, State and Region players.

Crawford also found time to assist at football camps, including a turn at Maryville College in 2021. Other instructional assignments for Crawford have come at East Tennessee State, Carson-Newman, Middle Tennessee and Southwest Mississippi Junior College.

Crawford is married to the former Brenda Ann Bright of Philadelphia, Tennessee. They are the parents of Jake, a Maryville College graduate; and Drew, who graduated from Guilford College. Jake works for Duke Energy and lives with his family in Hartford, Tennessee. Drew is director of stadium operations for the Augusta (Ga.) GreenJackets, a minor league affiliate of the Atlanta Braves.
