Box Score In men's soccer action, Maryville fell to Averett 1-0 in the first round of the USA South Tournament on Averett's campus on Sunday.
The first half was scoreless but didn't lack action. The Cougars of Averett had the better of the chances but Maryville was able to keep it competitive. The Scots were out shot 8-4 in the first half while equaling the Cougars in corner kicks 2-2.
The second half was much of the same with Averett once again having the better of the opportunities. Finally in the 73rd minute Averett scored the only goal of the game.
"Our guys played their hearts out today on the road against the second seeded team in the conference," said head coach
Pepe Fernandez. "We generated some chances and got some opportunities against a really good team. I'm very proud of this group for playing as hard as they did down the stretch this year. We will go back to the drawing board and be better next year."
The loss ends a tough and trying year for the normally proud program. This marks the first losing season in the men's soccer program in more than a decade.
