Box Score It would take only 29 seconds for the Payne Fisher to find the back of the net and in the 39th minute of play the sophomore midfielder from Columbia, Tennessee would add the eventual game winner as Maryville beat Piedmont 2-1 on Saturday evening on the campus of Maryville College.
Hard work led to the first goal of the evening for the Scots as freshman Patrick Braxton beat a Lion defender to the end line and played a beautiful cross to the foot of Fisher. Fisher promptly found the back of the net to give the Maryville an early lead less than a minute into the contest. It would be Fisher once again in the 39th minute as he took a pass from freshman Will Zuckerman and then found his range from just outside the box, beating the keeper in the top corner of the goal. Fisher's heroics would prove to be enough as Piedmont would tally a late goal in the 82nd minute.
"When your team is struggling, sometimes you really need a guy to step up and tonight that guy was Payne Fisher," said head coach Pepe Fernandez. "Fisher scoring two goals was a big lift for us tonight, but it took a team effort to hold onto the lead and put Piedmont away. We needed this win tonight, I'm happy for our guys."
The win brings Maryville to 4-6-1 on the year and 2-1 in USA South action. The Scots will be back in action on Tuesday when they host Centre College for a 7:00 pm start.
