MC Sports Information

Maryville College's Brittany Henry threw three consecutive complete games and close to 300 pitches to help the Scots advance through the GSAC softball tournament loser's bracket on Saturday. With Huntingdon in the driver's seat alone in the winner's bracket, Maryville earned an opportunity to play the No.1 seed for the championship on Sunday by knocking off LaGrange, Salem, and Piedmont.

Game 5 LaGrange vs Maryville (Elimination Game)

Maryville 1, LaGrange 0 (LaGrange eliminated)

The Scots used a one-hit pitching performance by freshman Brittany Henry to eliminate LaGrange College from the 2012 Great South Athletic Conference softball tournament by the score of 1-0 on Saturday morning.

MC got on the scoreboard when Leah Kelley stroked a two out double to left field scoring Taylor Dockery in the Scots' first at-bat.

Henry kept LaGrange bats silent, recording a no-hitter until the Panthers' Laura Webber connected for a double down the left field line in the sixth inning. The GSAC Freshman of the Year closed the door and finished her complete game victory with nine strikeouts.

Kelley finished 2-for-2 at the plate as LaGrange's Kalya Folds held the Scots to only four hits in the loss.

Maryville will advance to Game 8, scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.

Game 6 Salem vs Agnes Scott (Elimination Game)

Salem 6, Agnes Scott 5 (Agnes Scott eliminated)

The No. 6 seeded Spirit sent the No. 4 seeded Scotties home with a 6-5 decision with a strong first inning.  Salem put four runs on the scoreboard in their first at-bat, recording five hits and taking advantage of one Agnes Scott miscue.

Salem extended their lead to 5-0 after leadoff hitter Shelby Drummond singled, stole second, and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Amber Bass promptly sent Drummond home with a sacrifice fly.

Agnes Scott would whittle away Salem's lead over the next three innings scoring two runs in the second, a run in the third, and tied the game 5-5 in the fourth inning with a double by Shivani Ghodadra scoring Melanie Ennis and Ashley Monsrud.

Salem scored their game-winning run in the fifth when Kayla Kennedy singled, was sacrificed to second, and was driven in by a Kristi Morton single to right center field.

Julia Blattner suffered the loss on the mound with five innings of five hit relief. Abby Settles earned her second tournament victory with a complete game effort scattering 11 hits.

Offensively, Agnes Scott was paced by Ghodadra (4-4, 1R, 2RBI), Ennis (2-4), and Avi Greene (2-4, 1R, 1RBI). The Spirit was led by Kristi Morton (3-4, 1R, 1RBI), Kayla Kennedy (2-4, 2R, 1 RBI), Shelby Drummond (2-4, 2R), and Ellie Vizcaino (2-4, 1R, 1RBI).

Agnes Scott ends their season 17-15 while Salem (13-21) advances to play Maryville in an elimination game at 3:00

Game 7 Piedmont vs Huntingdon (Winner Bracket Game)

Huntingdon 3, Piedmont 1

The Hawks pushed Piedmont to the loser's bracket as starting pitcher Bree Giordana tossed and hit her way past the Lions. Giordana limited Piedmont to three hits in a complete game effort while going 2-for-2 with a two-run homerun over the left field fence. Her offensive efforts were enough for the win, but Huntingdon pushed across an insurance run in the third inning when Lauren Welch drove a two out double to left center field to score Jenna Rimensnyder. Piedmont scored their only run in the third inning when Emily Cheek singled to score Whitney Wolfe.

Lauren Welch finished the game 3-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.
