The Maryville College softball team attempted to force a pair of games on Sunday to determine the 2012 Great South champion, but No.1 seed Huntingdon College needed only three tournament games and three wins to claim their fourth league softball title and first crown since the 2006 season by defeating the Scots 7-2 on Sunday afternoon.
Maryville gave a gallant effort claiming an early lead in their first at-bat. Brittany Henry walked and was sacrificed to second. An errant throw allowed Henry to score an unearned run giving MC a 1-0 lead.
The Hawks struck back in the bottom of the third inning when Angela Barkman doubled to left center. A Ashley Johnson single put runners in scoring position and Jenna Rimensnyder laced a two out double to right center field for a pair of RBI's.
MC tied the game 2-2 in the top of the sixth when Henry singled up the middle and was successfully sacrificed to second base. An illegal pitch put Henry on third base and a Chastity Smith single sent Henry home.
Huntingdon answered and put the game out of reach with five runs on five hits including key RBI's by Lauren Welch, Haley Praytor, Angela Barkman, and Gabby Alcantar.
Tournament MVP Bree Giordana had a no-hitter until Henry's single in the sixth inning. She finished with a complete game three hitter, striking out six Scots while allowing only one earned run.
MC's Brittany Henry suffered the loss after scattering seven hits and striking out five.
Maryville finished their season at 16-23 while the Hawks will represent the GSAC in the 2012 NCAA Division III Championships with their 28-13 overall mark.
