Box Score The Maryville College men's basketball team completed a seasonal sweep of future USA South member Covenant College, winning the "Battle of the Scots" by the score of 48-47 late Wednesday evening in Lookout Mountain, Georgia.
MC's Spencer Peak deposited a three-pointer with twenty-two seconds remaining to give Maryville a 47-44 advantage. Peak was fouled on the visiting Scots' next possession and hit a free-throw to make it a four point game with eight seconds remaining. Covenant's Colton McGriff stroked a trey at the buzzer but it was not enough to complete the comeback.
The low scoring challenge featured a strong inside game by Maryville. MC tallied 26 points in the paint including a game-high 13 points from freshman Jaumonee Byrd. Byrd was 6-for-12 from the floor. Spencer Peake and Oscar Butler each added eight points, while Butler paced MC on the boards with eight rebounds.
Covenant (11-8) had a 10 point effort by Colton McGriff on 4-of-13 shooting. Rosbie Mutcherson and Jon DeVries each posted nine points.
Maryville (8-11) will now prepare for a Saturday battle as they host USA South foe Methodist University. Tip-off is slated for 3:00 p.m. in MC's Boydson Baird Gymnasium.
