Box Score A Christian Ford jump shot with two seconds remaining sent Maryville College to overtime, but the Scots could not hold on to the lead and fell 72-70 to Oglethorpe University in LaGrange, Georgia on Sunday evening.
Maryville shot 42% from the field and held the Stormy Petrels to a 40% effort, but OU took advantage of second chance baskets after out rebounding the Scots 45-33 that included a 17-9 advantage on the offensive glass.
Oglethorpe (6-1) was paced by Tyler Courson's 24-point effort on 7-of-14 shooting. He was 3-for-7 from beyond the arc and knocked down 7-of-12 free throws. Alex Davis poured in a dozen points while Victor Rohlfs added 10.
Maryville (1-4) used a double-double by Jaumonee Byrd to keep pace. Byrd tallied 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting while leading MC with 10 rebounds. Senior guard J.P. Burris added 11 points while shooting 50% from the field. Austin Mullinax connected on a pair of treys en route to a 10-point performance.
MC's Ford hit a three-pointer with 2:44 left in the extra period, but a key basket by OU's Drew Patrick and a free-throw by Courson sealed the victory for Oglethorpe.
The Scots will now prepare for a mid-week non-conference challenge at Sewanee on Wednesday. Tip-off is slated for 8:00 p.m.
