Box Score The Maryville College men's basketball team used a strong first half to turn away the Vikings from Berry College 85-68 in MC's Boydson Baird Gymnasium on Saturday evening.
The Scots' defense allowed only 18 points on 24% shooting before the Vikings could make adjustments at the half. Berry could not find their perimeter attack the entire game going 4-for-20 from beyond the arc. The Scots out rebounded their non-conference visitor 52-41 and forced 21 Viking turnovers on 15 steals.
Berry (3-4) was paced by the double-double effort of Owen Jacobs. The post player tallied a game-high 23 points on 7-of-12 shooting while grabbing 11 rebounds. Hunter Smoak added 13 points after hitting three treys.
Maryville (2-5) had four players record double digit scoring. Christian Ford was 6-for-12 from the floor with three treys for a team-high 18 points. Oscar Butler finished a double-double with 16 points and a game-high 16 rebounds. Spencer Shoffner dropped a pair of three's for 15 points while Jaumonee Byrd found hard in the paint for 14 points and eight rebounds. Joey Bodewig was also strong on the boards with nine on the evening.
The Scots will now prepare for finals and their final road trip before the holidays on December 17-18 in Lexington, Kentucky.
