The Maryville College softball team concluded their USA South weekend swing in Newport News, Virginia. The Scots dropped a twinbill to the CNU Captains by the scores of 7-4 and 8-1.
Maryville posted a quick 2-0 lead in their first at bat when Caitlin Cox blasted a two-out homerun over the right-centerfield fence. CNU tied the game 2-2 in the second and took the lead for good with a three run third inning. The Scots closed the 7-2 gap with a pair of runs in the sixth when Jennie Burks doubled in Lexie Randolph and Megan Mihaliak singled in Burks. Lexie Randolph (1-12) suffered the loss after scattering 12 hits and allowing only three earned runs. Kalyn Jones paced MC's offense with a pair of hits.
In the series finale, Christopher Newport took advantage of four MC errors and four unearned runs in the first inning to turn away the Scots. The Scots could only manage three hits off the Captain hurlers. Corey Hairrell finished 2-for-3 while Kalyn Jones picked up MC's only other hit as the Captains (17-8, 9-2 USA South) pushed across eight runs on eight hits.
The Scots (1-27, 1-13) will prepare to host USA South foes William Peace and Meredith over the Easter holiday weekend.
