The Maryville College softball team dropped a USA South road double header to Averett University in Danville, Virginia on Saturday afternoon.
In the first game, MC fell to the Cougars 4-2. Averett scored a run in the first on a Taylor Dix RBI single. The Scots evened the score to 1-1 in the top of the fifth inning after an Ashley Braley doubled down the left field line to drive in Kayla Aloisi.
The tie did not last long as Averett touched MC's Lexie Randloph for three runs, only one earned to expand their lead to 4-1 after five complete innings.
The Scots closed the gap in their final at-bat when Caitlin Cox doubled to left field to send Emilie Craven home.
Averett's April Costa (8-9) shut down MC's late rally to earn the win. She scattered nine hits while striking out four. MC's Lexie randolph (2-14) suffered the complete game loss on the mound.
Offensively, Maryville's nine hit attack was paced by a trio of hitters with a pair of hits each. Megan Mihaliak, Ashley Braley, and Jennie Burks supplied the offense for the Scots.
In the series finale, Averett took the series with a 6-3 win. MC took a 1-0 lead in their first at-bat when Corey Hairrell doubled in Megan Mihaliak who earlier singled. The Cougars took advantage of a pair of Maryville errors to post five runs in the bottom of the inning.
Trailing 6-1, the Scots posted a pair of runs in the third inning when Kalyn Jones drove in Taylor Dockery who singled to left field. Kayla Aloisi plated Caitlin Cox with an infield single to secure MC's final run.
Aloisi (0-13) suffered the loss after throwing six inning of nine hit ball. She surrendered only two earned runs.
MC's offense was led by Mihaliak and Cox each stroking a pair of hits.
The Scots (2-32, 2-18 USA South) will conclude their season on Sunday at Mary baldwin College in Staunton, Virginia.
