Box Score After 110 minutes of some of the hardest played soccer of the year, Maryville College and Transylvania University settled for a 1-1 draw in men's soccer action on Tuesday evening in Maryville.
In a physically brutal matchup between two traditionally strong programs, neither team would give an inch in the first half. The Pioneers would have the upper hand in the shot column (6-4) while the Scots held the advantage in corner kick opportunities (4-3). Neither team would score. The first half was however a sign of things to come as Transylvania received the first yellow card of the match in the 40th minute.
The second half was equally as brutal as the teams combined for a pair of goals, eight yellow cards and a pair of red cards. Transylvania would be the first to light up the score board in the 66th minute. The Scots show a significant amount of resilience, would answer in the 82nd minute as Tim Baker found the back of the net from Alex Waddell. Just two minutes later, the proverbial top came off as an aggressive and dangerous play in the box led to a Pioneer yellow card. As the trainers were attending to the injured Scot, a small altercation broke out that would eventually lead to red card for Maryville. The Scots' were forced to play the last six minutes of regulation and 20 minutes of overtime a man down.
"We showed a lot of resilience tonight," said head coach Pepe Fernandez. "I'd still like us to start a little faster, but we played with a good team a man down for a significant amount of time. I'm proud of our effort tonight, our guys played with heart at the end."
The draw brings Maryville's record to 4-1-2 overall. The Scots will once again be in action on Friday as they host NC Wesleyan. Game time is set for 5:30 pm as Maryville will celebrate Homecoming.
