Maryville Rallies to Remain Undefeated in USA South Action

The Maryville College men's basketball team used a strong second half to secure a come-from-behind league victory over Greensboro College by the score of 85-77 on Friday evening in MC's Boydson Baird Gymnasium.

 

The Scots could not find their shooting touch in the first half hitting only 39% of their shots and only a pair of three-pointers. In contrast, the Pride hit 57% from the field before intermission including a 6-for-11 effort from beyond the arc. Halftime found Greensboro with a 50-40 lead.

 

Maryville's adjustments gave shooters better looks and the Scots hit 60% from the floor in the closing period. Defensively, MC forced 18 turnovers and held the Pride to a 33% shooting effort in the second half that included only a pair of treys. The Scots out rebounded the Pride 46-36 and was extremely unselfish in the second half finishing with 20 team assists.

 

Greensboro (3-9, 0-3 USA South) was led by the double-double of Damian Dixon. Dixon finished with 15 points while bringing down 11 rebounds. Will Griffin added 14 points and six rebounds while Tracy Jester tossed in 13 points. Jermaine Bates contributed 11 points as the Pride finished hitting 43.5% of their shots from the floor.

 

Maryville (7-6, 3-0 USA South) was paced by a pair of double-double performances. Jaumonee Byrd hit 9-of-13 shots for 20 points while bringing down a dozen rebounds. Guard Spencer Shoffner also grabbed 12 rebounds while sinking 16 points. Point guard J.P. Burris went 5-for-10 from the field including three treys for 16 points. Oscar Butler added 11 points, seven rebounds, and six assist to help the Scots finish with a 49% shooting effort from the floor.

 

The Scots will return to action tomorrow when they host USA South rival Methodist University. Tip-off in the Cooper Athletic Center is slated for 4:00 on Saturday afternoon.
