Box Score The Maryville College Fighting Scots basketball team extended their win streak to seven with a strong come from behind 66-51victory over Covenant College in Lookout Mountain, Georgia on Saturday evening.
Following a first half that featured MC hitting only 38% of their shots and not one goal from beyond the arc, the visiting Scots found their shooting touch while turning up their defensive intensity.
Trailing 34-27 at the half, Maryville stepped on the court and hit three consecutive treys by Oscar Butler, J.P. Burris, and Spencer Shoffner to secure their first lead of the second period. MC limited their opponent to only 38% shooting in the second half with the host Scots not being able to connect on a three-pointer the entire second half. Maryville pulled away with a 14-for-23 effort at the charity stripe.
Covenant (8-11, 3-5 USA South) was led by Robby Bell with nine points. Chris Boyd, Colton McGriff, and Nate Frierson each added eight points with McGriff pacing the Scots on the boards with eight.
Maryville (11-6, 7-0 USA South) was paced by Jaumonee Byrd and Spencer Shoffner. Byrd battled down low for 13 points on 6-of-10 shooting while Shoffner connected for 13 points on 5-of-12 shooting that included a pair of treys. Oscar Butler tossed in 11 points on 50% shooting while Byrd led MC on the boards with a game-high nine rebounds.
Maryville will now prepare for a mid-week non-conference road challenge. They will travel to Birmingham, Alabama on Wednesday to challenge Birmingham Southern College. Tip-off is slated for 8:00 p.m.
