Box Score The Oglethorpe University Stormy Petrels used a solid shooting effort both inside and outside to defeat the Maryville College Fighting Scots men's basketball team 86-75 in the 2014 Emory Invitational in Atlanta, Georgia on Saturday afternoon.
Oglethorpe used a 52% shooting effort from the floor that included a 43% effort from beyond the arc to take a 43-32 advantage into the locker room at the half. Maryville was paced by Jaumonee Byrd's 16 points in the first stanza and kept pace by out rebounding the Petrels 21-13.
Maryville pulled to within three points, but OU finished the game hitting 29-of-47 shots from the floor (62%) while sinking 10-of-19 treys (53%). Maryville could only counter the zone defense with a 42% success rate and could not find their long-range attack, hitting only 5-of-31 shots (16%) from beyond the arc.
Oglethorpe (6-1) finished with four scorers in double digits. Alex Davis paced the Petrels with 17 points while Connor Smith poured in 16. Drew Patrick added 15 while Romello Bates finished with a dozen points.
The Scots (3-2) had a trio of players record double-digit efforts. Jaumonee Byrd led all scorers with 24 points on 12-of-17 shooting from the floor. Spencer Shoffner finished with 14 points while Oscar Butler added 12 points and nine rebounds.
Maryville will challenge the tournament host Emory University on Sunday. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
