Box Score The Maryville College Fighting Scots used a balanced attack to defeat the Piedmont College Lions 98-78 in a key USA South battle in MC's Boydson Baird Gymnasium on Saturday evening.
The Scots connected on seven first half treys while hitting 90% of their free throws to jump out to a 48-30 halftime advantage. The Lions could not find their touch from the perimeter (0-for-6) while only hitting 32% of their first period shots.
Maryville drained an additional seven shots from beyond the arc to close out the game as Piedmont battle back with a 62% shooting effort in the second period.
The Lions (7-10, 2-5 USA South) out rebounded MC 45-36 and 17-14 on the offensive glass. They were paced by the double-double performance of Chris Meeks. Meeks deposited 7-of-11 shots for a team-high 16 points while grabbing a game-high 13 rebounds. Brian Edwards tossed in a dozen points while grabbing nine boards. Jordyn Propst added 11 points and five rebounds.
Maryville, after beginning the season 1-5, is now 12-6 and 8-0 in USA South challenges. Five Scots recorded double-digit scoring while the team finished with 27 assists on the evening. Jaumonee Byrd went 8-for-13 from the field while hitting 8-of-8 free throws for a game-high 24 points. Byrd also collected eight rebounds. Christian Ford directed the offense with five assists while dropping 15 points. Spencer Shofner and J.P. Burris each sank a dozen points while Oscar Butler finished with a double-double performance consisting of 11 points and 11 boards. Burris led all guards with seven assists.
The win is MC's eighth consecutive victory and the Scots currently lead the USA South standings with six regular season league games remaining.
The Scots will prepare for a mid-week USA South Challenge as they host Covenant College on Wednesday. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m. in MC's Boydson Baird Gymnasium.
