Box Score The Maryville College men's basketball team clinched the USA South regular season title with an 81-49 win over Piedmont College in Demorest, Georgia on Wednesday evening.
The Scots took advantage of Piedmont's inconsistent perimeter attack and out paced the Lions 32-23 at the half. Led by Spencer Shoffner, Maryville deposited five first half treys while Piedmont could not deposit a shot from beyond the arc.
Maryville pulled away in the second half with a 57% shooting effort from the floor and a 91% (11-for-12) effort from the free-throw line while defensively holding the Lions to a 33% success rate from the field.
Piedmont (8-15, 3-10 USA South) was led by Safari Smith's 11 points. Chris Meeks and Chase England led the Lions with six rebounds apiece.
The Scots (17-7, 12-1 USA South) were paced by Spencer Shoffner's 5-for-9 effort from long distance for a game-high 17 points. Jaumonee Byrd was strong in the paint with 14 points on 50% shooting while Oscar Butler added 11 points. Butler, Shoffner, J.P. Burris, and Joey Bodewig crashed the boards with five rebounds each.
The Scots will prepare for their regular season finale on Saturday when they host Huntingdon College for "Senior Day". MC will honor seniors J.P. Burris and Craig Raye before their 4:00 tip-off in the Boydson Baird Gymnasium. Maryville has clinched the USA South regular season title and awaits seeding for the league tournament, to be hosted in MC's Cooper Athletic Center, beginning on Thursday, February 27th.
