Top Two Seeds Fall in USA South Men's Basketball Championships

The top two seeds fell in the opening round of the 2014 USA South men's basketball championships hosted by Maryville College. No.2 seeded Averett fell to Ferrum 77-71 before tournament host and No.1 seeded Maryville College was upset by Greensboro 91-83.

 

#3 Huntingdon 92, #6 Methodist 89

In the tournament opener, Huntingdon College had three players post over 20 points while Austin Hill and Terry Moorer finished with double-double performances. Hill posted 21 point and a team-high 12 rebounds while Moorer deposited 20 points while bringing down 11 boards. The Hawks Jason Varney was 6-for-15 from the field and finished with 20 points. Jerome Davis added a dozen points while dishing out a team-high eight assists.

 

Methodist finished the season 10-16 with Tobias Hilliard sinking 21 points. Bryan Hockaday had a double-double with 19 points and 14 rebounds. Keemon Ingram added 17 points for the Monarchs.

 

Huntingdon advances to 11-14 on the season and will face Ferrum College in the USA South seni-finals on Friday at 5:00.

 

#7 Ferrum 77, #2 Averett 71

Ferrum College upset the second seeded Cougars behind the double-double effort of Jamal Pullen. Pullen deposited 15 points while bringing down a game-high 15 rebounds. Brian Clarke went 6-for-16 from the field for a game-high 16 points while Jovon Miller dropped 12 points while collecting seven boards. Alek Ayer added 15 points and nine rebounds to the Panther attack.

 

Averett finished the season 12-14 behind Trevor West's 13 points. Cody Stephens deposited 12 points while Bradley Robinson finished with 11.

 

Ferum continues their quest for a title while advancing to 11-15 on the year.

 

#4 LaGrange 88, #5 NC Wesleyan 76

LaGrange took advantage of 20 NC Wesleyan turnovers to advance past the Bishops. Dustin Baxter and Denzel Robinson each finished with 17 points to pace the Panthers. Mark Wagner added 16 points while Patrick Dugger contributed 15 points and eight boards. Robinson led the Panthers with nine rebounds.

 

The Battling Bishops out rebounded their foe and were paced by Josh Morrison's game-high 23 points. Brandon Brown added 16 points while Shannon Huff and D.J. Weaver each sank 11 points. NC Wesleyan finishes the season 13-13.

 

LaGrange advances to 16-10 on the season and will face Greensboro in the second semi-final scheduled for 7:00 on Friday evening.

 

#8 Greensboro 91, #1 Maryville 83

The USA South regular season champion Scots were upset by Greensboro to close out the first round of action. The Pride out rebounded the Scots while Maryville did not take advantage of their free throws hitting 18-of-27 (66%) for the game.

 

Greensboro advanced to 12-14 on the season as Devan Gregory finished 8-for-14 from the field for a game-high 22 points. Will Griffin added 17 points while Damian Dixon finished with 14 points.

 

Maryville finishes their season 18-8 behind a pair of double-doubles from Jaumonee Byrd and Oscar Butler. Byrd was 8-for-12 from the field for 19 points and 10 rebounds while Butler added 11 points and 10 boards. Christian Ford went 8-for-15 from the floor to match Byrd's 19 points. J.P. Burris finished with 11 points to help the Scots.
