Big Inning Sends Cougars Past Scots 9-1

Averett University used a seven run fourth inning to defeat the Maryville College Scots 9-1 in softball on Friday evening on the first day of the 2014 Emory Invitational in Atlanta.

MC's Emilie Craven deposited a two-out single to score Lexie Randolph who earlier singled to give Maryville an early 1-0 lead.

Averett answered with a two-out RBI single by Rhyan Scearce to tie the game at 1-1 after three complete innings.

The Cougars broke the game open with a seven hit, seven run attack in the home half of the fourth inning. A pair of doubles by Jessica Long and Mary Beth Smith combined with two-RBI singles by Scearce and Jessye Crews broke open the game in Averett's favor.

Maryville (0-2) was led by a four hit attack. Kelci Swafford, Lexie Randolph, Kayla Aloisi, and Emilie Craven stroke MC's only hits. Kayla Aloisi suffered the loss on the mound giving up six hits and six runs in 3.1 innings of work.

Averett (1-1) had a strong pitching performance from Amy Hamlett. Without striking out a Scots, she limited MC to four hits and an earned run in a complete game effort on the mound.

The Scots will challenge Emory and Averett on Saturday to conclude the early season invitational in Atlanta.
