Second Half Adjustments Send Scots Past LaGrange 89-78

The Maryville College Fighting Scots basketball team used a double-double effort from Jaumonee Byrd and a strong defensive effort in the second half to secure an 89-78 win over LaGrange College on Saturday evening in Maryville's Cooper Athletic Center.

 

The Panthers took a 42-39 lead into the half after lighting up the nets with a 53% shooting effort that included a 5-for-9 success rate from long distance. Maryville kept pace with a 46% shooting effort and made numerous defensive adjustments at the intermission.

 

Maryville forced LaGrange to attack the perimeter and the Panthers hit only 1-of-12 from beyond the arc to close out the game. Collectively, MC held LaGrange to a 39% shooting effort in the final period. The Scots took advantage of their free throws hitting 86% in the second period while LaGrange could not close the gap with a 56% shooting effort from the charity stripe.

 

LaGrange (12-9, 6-4 USA South) was led by Mark Wagner with 17 points. Denzel Robinson posted 14 points while grabbing seven rebounds. Braxton Ford added 13 points while Patrick Dugger tossed in 12 points and a team-high nine rebounds.

 

Maryville (14-6, 10-0 USA South) claimed their 10th consecutive victory as Byrd posted 21 points on 9-of-14 shooting while grapping a game-high 10 rebounds. Spencer Shoffner hit four treys en route to a 21 point outing. Christian Ford dished out a game-high five assists while sinking 15 points. Oscar Butler added 15 points and eight boards to preserve the victory.

 

The Scots will travel to Birmingham Southern this Tuesday for a non-conference challenge. This game is a re-scheduled event due to poor weather and travel conditions earlier in the season. Tip-off in Birmingham, Alabama is slated for 8:00 p.m. EST.
