The Maryville College softball team dropped a pair of USA South road games to Piedmont College in Demorest, Georgia on Wednesday afternoon. The nationally ranked Lions defeated MC 8-0 before closing the league series with a 7-4 victory.
Maryville surrendered 14 hits and eight earned runs in the first challenge. The Scots tallied five hits with Taylor Dickery, Jessica McMahan, Hannah Youngdeer, Kelly Barnhard, and Lexie Randolph each picking up singles off Piedmont starter Brittany Head. Head moves to 11-1 on the season on the mound while Kayla Aloisi (3-12) scattered 11 hits over 4.2 innings of work for the Scots.
In the second game, MC took a 3-0 lead in the second inning when the Scots tallied three unearned runs on a trio of Lion errors. They extended their lead to 4-0 the next inning when Kalyn Jones drove in Tiffany Brand.
Trailing 4-0 Piedmont put seven runs on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth inning all on base hits.
MC's Lexie Randloph (3-14) suffered the loss after giving up 10 hits in six innings of work. J. Ellingson (15-2) earned the win on the mound for Piedmont.
Maryville's five hit attack was paced by Kayla Aloisi who finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.
With the win Piedmont advances to 26-3 and 15-1 in USA South action while Maryville falls to 6-26 and 4-14 in league play.
Maryville will prepare to host LaGrange College in a USA South double header beginning at noon on Saturday.
