Box Score The Maryville College football team dropped their first USA South challenge of the season as the Hawks of Huntingdon College defeated the Fighting Scots 35-21 on MC's Honaker Field Saturday afternoon.
Huntingdon took their second possession beginning on their own 33 yard line. A key 23 yard pass play and a personal foul gave the Hawks the ball on MC's 20 yard line. Luke Bailey hit Jamichael Bibb from 20 yards out on their fourth play of the drive to complete a 67-yard scoring drive. A Jimbo Turk kick gave Huntingdon a 7-0 lead at the 11:27 mark in the first quarter.
The Scots fumbled on their next possession and Huntingdon took advantage with a quick strike scoring drive. Bailey connected with Brantley Carr for a 28 yard TD pass and the conversion made the score 14-0 in favor of the visiting Hawks.
Maryville's offense came alive in their next possession. An 11-yard rush by Evan Pittenger gave MC the ball on their own 42. Following a pair of pass completions and a pair of runs, Pittenger scampered 26 yards to pay dirt. Wesley Bloeme's kick made the score 14-7 with 6:34 remaining in the first quarter.
At the beginning of the second quarter, Huntingdon manufactured a steady 20-play, 92 yard scoring drive that ate up over nine minutes of the clock. Strong rushing by John Iwaniec and Jay Ware led to a 17-yard TD pass from Bailey to Diggan Andre to conclude the drive. Turk's kick made the score Huntingdon 21, Maryville 7.
The Scots could not take advantage of a Ruben Rodgers interception and a last second field goal attempt by Wes Bloeme before the half was blocked by Huntingdon's Jeremy Murphy.
At the half Maryville trailed by a pair of scores.
Maryville's opening drive of the second half stalled, but Huntingdon's Bibb fumbled a punt and Terrell Warren recovered close to mid-field.
The Scots put together a strong 12-play, 58 yard scoring drive that included a 13 yard pass and 17 yard pass to Ed Johnson as well as a 12 yard connection to tight end Jared Miller. Trenton Shuler took it to the house from a yard out to finish the scoring drive. Bloeme's kick made the score Huntingdon 21, Maryville 14.
Huntingdon capitalized on another MC special teams miscue giving them the ball on the Maryville 41. A pair of long runs by Luke Bailey and John Iwaniec put the Hawks in scoring position and Bailey hit Bibb from six yard out for the score. Turk's kick gave Huntingdon a 28-14 advantage going into the final quarter.
Maryville's Ryan Hastings blocked a punt giving MC the ball on Huntingdon's 39 yard line. Hard running by Raekwon Neal put Maryville on the doorstep and Pittenger found Jared Miller for a 2-yard pass TD. Wesley Bloeme's kick made the score 28-21.
Huntingdon put together an eight play, 94 yard drive that resulted in a touchback when quarterback Luke Bailey fumbled out of the end zone. They answered after MC next three-and-out with an eight play, 58 yard scoring drive where the Hawks took advantage of a pair of MC penalties. John Iwaniec dove in from two-yard out to record Huntingdon's final score.
Huntingdon (2-2, 1-1 USA South) was paced on the ground by John Twaniec's 60 yards on 17 carries. The Hawks had 129 yards on the ground for the game. Luke Bailey was 22-for-34 for 261 yards and four touchdowns. His favorite targets were Mark White (7 catches, 70 yards) and Jamichael Bibb (5 catches, 40 yards). The Hawks defense was led by Jake Green's 15 tackles. Zach Brownell and Jacob Wright combined for 19 stops.
Maryville (2-2, 1-1 USA South) had 156 rushing yards with Evan Pittenger accumulating 63 yards on 11 carries while Raekwon Neal added 55 yards on 11 touches. Pittenger was 19-for-39 for 188 passing yards and a passing TD. Maurice Walker hauled in five catches for 56 yards while Ed Johnson had five catches for 55 yards. The trio of Joshua Krebs, Micah Smith, and Jayvon McCullough each tallied 10 tackles with Kent Minor and Gabe Johnson combining for an additional 16 stops.
The Scots will now prepare for LaGrange College next weekend as they host the Panthers for their Homecoming weekend.
