Box Score The Maryville College men's soccer program overcame an early goal to rally for a thrilling 2-1 double-overtime victory over USA South foe North Carolina Wesleyan College on Saturday afternoon at the Sansom Sports Complex in Knoxville.
In the first 39-second of the contest, the Bishops' Egor Kabalin blasted an attempt turned away by MC keeper Jon Taylor, but Caetano Viegas gathered the rebound and chipped it into the net to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
The first half ended with the Scots out shooting the Bishops 9-5 with keeper Jesper Olsson recording four saves.
Maryville repeated their attack in the second period out shooting NCW 9-5, but still trailed by a score with only 20-minutes remaining.
At the 75-minute mark, Tim Baker lifted a high pass over the defender and Caleb Lucas beat a pair of defenders and the keeper for his 10th goal of the season for the equalizer.
As regulation ended Maryville had out shot Wesleyan 18-10 going into overtime.
Neither team made a dent in the scoreboard in the first extra period, but at the 102nd minute of the contest Hayden Puryear directed a high pass from the middle to the left of the box. Lucas directed the game-winner into the corner of the net to secure his 11th goal of the season moving the Scots to 10-1-1 and 4-0-1 in USA South play.
A strong defensive effort by Puryear, Brandon Baksh, and Thomas Palmer helped Jon Taylor secure his 10th win in net for MC. He recorded three saves on four shots on goal.
The loss gives NCW their first defeat in league play. The Bishops are 6-5-1 on the season and 4-1 within USA South challenges.
Maryville advances to 10-1-1 and 4-0-1 in USA South action.
The Scots will now prepare to travel to Demorest, Georgia on Wednesday to challenge Piedmont College.
