Box Score The Maryville College Scots football team suffered its first loss of the season on Saturday, falling to North Carolina Wesleyan, 24-7, in Rocky Mount, N.C.
The Scots gave up four interceptions and lost two fumbles, as the Bishops upended Maryville's vie for a 5-0 start.
The Bishops rolled up 366 yards of total offense, as Maryville reached 335 yards. The Scots forced two turnovers – an interception and a fumble – but N.C. Wesleyan controlled the ball with 34:00 of possession to the Scots' 26:00.
The Scots were led by Nick Myers, who went 10-of-15 for 113 yards through the air. Chaz Rokins posted 80 yards on 18 carries, finding Maryville's lone touchdown of the day, while Deshjion Whitlock had 68 yards on 10 carries.
Stevorius Kimball had 42 yards on eight receptions.
Kent Minor led the Scots defensively with eight tackles and a forced fumble, as DeAngelo Collington found eight stops with 1.5 tackles for a loss of 3 yards. Ezekial Koko also had an interception for Maryville.
For the Bishops, it was a three-headed monster offensively. After not having a rusher reach 100 yards for the entire season, Gerrel Patton emerged with 143 yards on 34 carries and a touchdown, while Dustin Midgett went 11-for-28 for 124 yards and a touchdown.
Receiver Malik Adams caught eight passes for 99 yards and a score for the Bishops in the win.
Kenneth Newsome had 11 tackles and a forced fumble, while Bobby Tucker had seven tackles to go along with three of the Bishops' four interceptions with 54 yards in returns.
N.C. Wesleyan struck first after a 10-play, 58-yard drive. Midgett found Adams for a 2-yard score, as the Bishops led 7-9 with 4:16 left in the first quarter.
Just into the second quarter, Maryville knotted the game at 7-all. A 10-yard run by Rokins ended a 10-play, 84-yard drive. The run knotted the game with 14:42 remaining in the first half.
With 51 seconds left in the half, Kyle Bennett came on the field to try to give Maryville its first lead behind a 42-yard field goal. The try was blocked by Bobby Tucker, as the Bishops ran the clock out to end the half with a 7-all score.
A fumble by Whitlock on the Scots' opening drive of the second half would lead to a N.C. Wesleyan lead. A nine-play, 46-yard drive was ended as Chris Richardson found a 20-yard field goal to give the Bishops a 10-7 lead with 11:13 left in the third quarter.
On N.C. Wesleyan's next drive, it only took one play, as Slade Dale found Malike Adams for a 59-yard touchdown pass. The Bishops led 17-7 with 8:58 remaining in the quarter.
After an interception, Richardson had a chance to extend the Bishops' lead to 13, but his 42-yard attempt sailed wide right.
N.C. Wesleyan's final score came with a 1-yard rush by Patton with 3:01 remaining in the game. The score would give the Bishops the 24-7 USA South victory.
The Scots move to 4-1 overall, and 1-1 in the USA South, which puts them in a tie for third within the conference rankings. Huntingdon (2-0) and LaGrange (1-0) lead the conference.
Maryville will look next to Ferrum College (1-4, 1-1 USAS) next Saturday, as the Scots host homecoming. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m.
