Box Score The Maryville College men's soccer program advanced to the USA South Athletic Conference semi-finals with a 5-0 victory over Covenant College on Saturday evening.
MC freshman George Davies placed a pair of hard-fought goals in the first half to secure the home win for the orange and garnet. Davies hit a 30-plaus yard shot beyond the top of the box in the 15th minute for the game-winner. Just nine minutes later, he was tackled in the box, popped up, recovered, and blasted his 10th goal of the season to give Maryville a 2-0 advantage.
While Maryville maintained a consistent offensive attack with 17 shots on goal, the Scots' defense paced by Hayden Puryear, Thomas Palmer, Alex Waddell, and Brandon Baksh helped Jon Taylor pitch a shutout in net allowing only three total shots on goal.
The second half began with Caleb Lucas lifting an attack over the heads of a pair of defenders and just out of the reach of Covenant keeper Daniel Kubin. The unassisted goal at the 58th minute was Lucas' 15th of the season.
Davies was on the attack in the 67th minute but dished to Bret Thomas. Thomas placed a header into the goal for his 5th goal of the season to make the score 4-0.
Just before the 71st minute, Hayden Puryear connected for his 4th goal of the season with a lengthy right-foot attack.
The loss ends Covenant's season at 5-11-2. Maryville (14-2-2) will advance to the semi-finals against Methodist University, who defeated Ferrum College 4-0. The tournament will be at No.1 seeded Greensboro College in Greensboro, North Carolina who defeated Huntingdon College 5-1 on Saturday.
