Box Score The Maryville College men's basketball team used back-to-back solid performance from their point guards to defeat Oglethorpe University 92-83 to conclude the 2015 Small College Basketball Classic in Maryville, Tennessee on Sunday evening.
Sophomore point guard Jay Bowyer for the Scots had one of his best nights in the orange and garnet with 19 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists on the heals of Emanuelle Garcia's career night last evening against Emory.
The Stormy Petrels and Maryville battled to a 41-41 tie at the intermission. Oglethorpe set the nets on fire going 8-for-11 from beyond the arc, shooting 54% from the floor (16-for-30). Garcia's 12 first half points on 4-of-5 treys helped MC keep pace.
Maryville pulled away in the second half behind Bowyer's 16 points and Spencer Shoffner's 13 points on a combined 6-for-10 effort from the field. The Scots defense took advantage of a Petrel offense that went cold from the perimeter (4-of-12) and finished the game off hitting only 14-of-31 shots from the floor.
Oglethorpe (1-4) was paced by Justin Edwards' complete game effort with 17 points, 8 assists, 8 rebounds, and 5 steals. Connor Smith was 4-for-6 from beyond the arc and 7-for-12 on the evening for a team-high 20 points. Will Perry was 7-for-15 for 17 points while Chris Lawrence and George Andino tossed in 14 and 13 respectively. The Stormy Petrels finished shooting 49% from the floor and 52% from beyond the three-point line.
Maryville (4-1) was led by senior Spencer Shoffner who hit 5-of-15 shots and 9-of-9 free-throws for a game-high 21 points. Jay Bowyer was 5-for-7 from the field, 2-for-3 from three-point territory, and 7-for-8 from the charity stripe for his 19 points. Emanuelle Garcia finished 5-for-7 from the field and 4-of-5 from long distance for 15 points. Senior Logan Brewer was perfect from the floor for 15 points while hauling down six rebounds. The Scots knocked down 87% of their free throws and scored 19 points off the 17 turnovers their defense forced.
The Scots will prepare for a home mid-week challenge against Johnson University on Wednesday. Tip-off against the Royals will be 7:00 p.m. MC will begin USA South action on Saturday when they host Huntingdon College at 4:00 p.m.
