Scots fall to Piedmont 73-67

The Maryville College men's basketball team fell to 12-12 on the season with a 73-67 loss at the hands of Piedmont College to close out regular season action in MC's Boydson Baird Gymnasium on Wednesday evening.

 

The Scots jumped out to a 13-3 lead following a Calvin Songster three-pointer at the 15:11 mark. The Lions went on a 19-8 run over the next ten minutes giving Maryville a slight 24-22 advantage with five minutes remaining before the half. A Chase England trey tied the game at 31-31 and Piedmont's Brian Edwards concluded the first half scoring with a layup making the score 33-31 at the break.

 

The Lions out shot MC 43% to 34% before going to the locker room with the Scots hitting only 4-of-17 from beyond the arc. Piedmont also won the battle of the boards by out rebounding MC 23-19.

 

An 18-9 run in the first seven minutes of the second half culminated with an England three-pointer and the Lions led the Scots 51-40 at the 13:32 mark. Maryville's 32% shooting effort combined with Piedmont's 54% shooting did not allow them to close the gap. MC finished the game 21-for-63 (33%) from the floor while hitting only 7-of-30 shots (23%) from long distance. The Lions finished by out rebounding the Scots 46-30.

 

Piedmont (13-11, 8-6) climbs to third place in the USA South standings. The Lions were paced by three players posting double digits in scoring. Brian Edwards hit 7-of-12 shots for a team-high 17 points. Chase England tossed in 14 while Chris Meeks added a dozen. Landry Assinesi dished out six assists to direct Piedmont's efficient offensive attack.

 

Maryville (12-12, 7-6) falls to fifth place in the present league standings. Jaumonee Byrd hit 5-of-10 shots for a team-high 17 points in the post. Calvin Songster hit three treys en route to 13 points while Christian Ford added 11. Oscar Butler paced MC on the boards with a game-high eight rebounds.

 

The Scots will prepare for their final regular season game on Saturday in Montgomery, Alabama. MC will challenge Huntingdon College during a 3:00 p.m. EST tip-off.
