Scots split Covenant series with 11-6 win

Maryville College split the series with Covenant on Wednesday afternoon, taking the second game of the day in an 11-6 win.

The Georgian Scots won the first game, 8-5, outlasting a late rally by MC.

Maryville was led on the day by Cyndee Morrisette would went 5-for-9 with two run scored and an RBI. Savannah Cook was 4-for-7 with four RBIs, while Kalyn Jones was 4-for-7 with two RBIs.

Maryville found the plate first during the second game, as Caitlyn Hogg jumped on a pitch for a double to left center. Jones posted an RBI double to nearly the same spot, scoring Hogg for a 1-0 lead early.

Covenant would retaliate in the bottom of the second, as Kendall Whann reached on a fielder's choice. The junior stole second and third before a blooper to right center by Shade Epes would score Whann for a 1-1 ball game.

Tiffany Brand started things in the top of the third with a double down the left field line – Maryville's third double of the game. Jones found a single to center field, before pinch runner Jessica McMahan would steal second. Brand scored on the pickoff attempt, as Morrisette singled to advance McMahan to third. Kazdyn Cooper would score McMahan from third with a sacrifice bunt fielder's choice. Emilie Craven loaded the bags with a single to left, before Morrisette could score on a wild pitch. Savannah Cook found a two-RBI single left center, to give the Scots their fifth run of the inning. Maryville led 6-1 going to the bottom of the third.

Covenant would chip away during the bottom of the third, after Kasey Hart single to short and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Morgan Lane single to left, before Jordan Brett was able to score Hart on a fielder's choice to the shortstop for a 6-2 score.

Covenant again cut away at Maryville's lead in the bottom of the fourth. Jami Johnson singled, before Epes reached on a bunt single. Joni Johnson used a double down the right field line to score both runners for a 6-4 score going into the fifth inning.

MC stuck back, though, as Morrisette would single to the pitcher. Cooper reached on an error by the shortstop, Lexie Randolph could sacrifice both runners over. Morissette crossed the plate after Cook singled to the shortstop, to give the Scots a 7-4 advantage.

Lane singled up the middle to start things in the bottom of the fifth, as Madison Quirk would match with a single to first. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch, before Jami Johnson singled to center to cut Maryville's lead to 7-6.

A Megan Mihaliak single to left helped the Scots, as Brand's RBI double to left-center scored Mihaliak. Morrisette singled to third, before Cooper used a sacrifice fly to center for a 9-6 Maryville advantage going to the bottom of the sixth.

Randolph doubled off the left field fence, before Cook found find her fourth hit of the game with a single to the catcher. Randolph scored off an errant throw, before Hogg could single to left. Mihaliak reached on a fielder's choice, as Jones pushed an RBI single to left to score Hogg. The Scots would take the win, 11-6.

The Scots were led by Cook who finished the game 4-for-4 with four RBIs. Kalyn Jones was 3-for-5 with two RBIs, while Morrisette finished 3-for-5 with two run scored.

Randoph picked up the win for the Scots, going the complete game with two strikeouts. She allowed 13 hits and six runs from Covenant.

During the first game of the day, Covenant College struck first in the bottom of the third, as the Scots were still searching for their first hit. Joni Johnson singled to right, before Hart reached on a sacrifice bunt error back to the pitcher. Brett singled to left, loading the bases for the Georgian Scots. Shannon Schmitt scored Covenant's first run with an RBI single up the middle, before Madison Quirk blew the game open with a grand slam to left field. Maryville trailed 5-0 going into the top of the fourth.

The Orange and Garnet would gain some ground, though, as Jones and Cooper both reached on a hit by pitch and walk. Morrisette singled to left for Maryville's first hit of the game to load the bags for the second time for MC. Pinch runner Melissa Frease scored on a Rachel Taylor sacrifice fly to left for a 5-1 score.

Errors proved costly for Maryville again in the bottom of the fourth. A two-out error opened the flood gates for Covenant again, as a Lane double to left center advanced Hart to third. Brett found an RBI on a single to right, before Schmitt found her second RBI of the contest with a double to left center to score Lane. The Georgian Scots led 7-1 after four innings.

Covenant added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning as Hart would double to left center. Brett singled to score Hart for an 8-1 lead.

Maryville would rally in the top of the seventh inning, as they loaded the bags behind a singles by Mihaliak, Jones and Cooper to load the bases. Morrisette found her second hit of the day with an RBI single to left to score Brand. Rachel Taylor and Hannah Youngdeer would each find RBI walks with the bases loaded, before Cook earned an RBI after being hit by a pitch. The Scots cut the lead to 8-5, all with two outs, before a pop out would end the game.

Maryville was led by Morrisette who went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Jones was 1-for-1, while Cooper finished 1-for-3 – both with singles.

Covenant saw Quirk finish 1-for-2 with a run scored and four RBIs after her gland slam. Schmitt was 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBIs, as Brett was 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.
