Box Score 2 Berry College snapped the Scots' three-game win streak, as the Vikings swept Maryville in Wednesday's double-header.
Berry's pitching shut the Scots down, as Allison Coronado and Kassie Howard combined for 14 innings while only allowing one run. The Scots posted nine hits against the duo, as the pair struck out 13 Scots in 6-1 and 5-0 games.
The Vikings found the plate first in the top of the second. Brook Mackelburg found an RBI single up the middle to score MacKenzie Tuttle from third. Going to the bottom of the inning, Berry led 1-0.
A two-run inning extended the Viking's lead to 3-0 in the top of the fourth, as Berry College torched left field with each of their four hits in the inning. An RBI single by Kenzie Flemming to left, scored Tuttle for the second time in the game. Ally Claytor followed suit with the bags loaded, scoring Allison DeBusk from third for the 3-0 advantage.
Brittany Tuttle reached on an errant throw to start the seventh, as the speedy freshman advanced to second on the throw. Pinch hitter Maggie Piety used a sacrifice fly to left to score the runner for a 4-0 Berry lead. A walk and a single to right loaded the bases, before an error and a single to first allowed two more unearned runs to cross the plate for the Vikings, as the Scots trailed 6-0 going to the bottom of the seventh.
The Scots got on the board with a two-out rally. Savannah Cook reached on a walk, before Caitlyn Hogg laced a double to left-center to score the speedy right fielder.
Maryville's six-hit attack was led by Cydnee Morrisette who was 2-for-3 in the game. Cook was 1-for-2 with the Scots' only run, while Hogg was 1-for-4 with an RBI.
Berry was led by the 1-for-2 effort of Mackenzie Tuttle, while she scored three runs. Pitcher Kassie Howard moves to 9-1, as she averages just a 0.87 ERA in 56.1 innings of work for the Vikings.
Errors proved costly for the Scots again in the top of the second during the day's second game. Rachel Bartoe reached on a walk, before stealing second base. An error scored Bartoe from second, giving the Vikings a 1-0 advantage early.
A four-hit, four-run top of the fifth gave the Vikings a 5-0 lead. Sarah Moore found a two-RBI single, before an RBI double by Bartoe scored Moore. Marie Collop would single to the pitcher to score Bartoe, giving Berry a five-run cushion.
Tiffany Brand ended pitcher Allie Coronado's bid for a no-hitter with a dribbler up the middle, before Kalyn Jones followed suit, dropping a hit into shallow right. Maryville couldn't plate a run, however, going to the seventh trailing 5-0.
Maryville was led by 1-for-3 efforts from Brand, Jones and Cook, while Megan Mihaliak added a sacrifice bunt.
Berry saw Sarah Moore go 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored, while Bartoe was 1-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Maryville College will look next to William Peace on Friday, March 27. First pitch for the USA South double-header is slated for 1 p.m.
