Box Score 2 Maryville College had two come-from-behind opportunities slip away on Friday afternoon, as William Peace took the USA South double-header, 9-7, 9-8.
The Scots' 23-hit attack was led by a 5-for-8 day from Jennie Burks, as she tossed in three RBIs and a run scored. Kazdyn Cooper went 4-for-8 with four RBIs for Maryville.
The Pacers got two on early, before Morgan Farmer cleared the bags with a three-run shot to left-center. Casey Taylor drew a walk, before Michaela Fox matched Farmer for a two-run homer to left-center. After the top of the first, William Peace led 5-0.
After a Caitlyn Hogg single and a Mihaliak walk, Kazdyn Cooper scored both runners with a single to right. Maryville trailed 5-2 after the first inning.
William Peace paced back in the top of the second, loading the bags with only one out. Farmer found her fifth RBI of the game with a double to left-center, scoring Lindsey Wiggins and Michelle Sheldon-Gregorio. Casey Taylor found a single off the pitcher, scoring Brandi Stamey for an 8-2 Pacers lead.
Maryville's Jennie Burks doubled off the right-center wall to start the bottom of the third, before Savannah Cook advanced her to third. Hogg grounded out to the shortstop, scoring Burks for an 8-3 score.
Burks singled to left to lead off the inning, before Jessica McMahan reached on a bunt single. McMahan stole second, as Burks was able to score on an errant throw by the second baseman. Two pitches later, McMahan would find the plate on a wild pitch, narrowing the Pacers' lead to 8-5.
A double to right and a single to left by Morgan Bryant and Shay Poteat put runners on for William Peace. Ragan Taylor would reach on a fielder's choice, scoring Bryant on the play for a 9-5 Peace lead.
A leadoff single by Cook was followed by two consecutive balks to put the speedster on third. Hogg drew a walk before stealing second, as Cook scored on a groundout by McMahan . Tiffany Brand singled up the middle to score Hogg to make the score 9-7.
Maryville was led by Cooper's 2-for-4 day, as she posted two RBIs. Hogg was 1-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Burks went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
William Peace saw Farmer go 2-for-4 with five RBIs and a run scored, while Wiggins was 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Fox went 1-for-2 with two RBIs and a run scored for the Pacers.
A five-hit inning got things started for the Pacers in the top of the first again. Farmer found her sixth RBI of the day with a single down the left-field line. McLean singled to center to load the bases, before an error scored William Peace's second run. A two-RBI double by Bryant scored Farmer and McClean to give the Pacers a 4-0 advantage early.
Stamey reached on a single to left, before stealing second in the top of the next inning. Farmer used a single to center to score the runner – her seventh RBI of the afternoon – for a 5-0 Pacers lead.
Maryville chipped away at the lead, as Mihaliak doubled off the fence in right. Cooper found a double of her own to score Mihaliak, before she would score on an errant catch by the second baseman for a 5-2 score.
William Peace added an extra run in the bottom of the third, as Bryan scored on an errant throw by center field.
The Scots scored during the bottom of the third, after Cooper slapped a single to third with the bases loaded, scoring Hogg. Morrisette grounded out to second to score McMahan from third, the Scots trailing 6-4 going to the fourth.
Poteat double down the left field line, before a Casey Taylor single to left center scored her from third. Bryant scored just after with an RBI single by Ragan Taylor, before Stamey used an RBI single to center to score her for a 9-4 William Peace lead.
A two-RBI double by Randolph scored Mihaliak and Morrisette, narrowing William Peace's lead to only three. Burks followed suit with an RBI double down the left-field line to score Randolph from second. Burks scored on a wild pitch, for a 9-8 final score.
Burks was 3-for-4 in the final game of the day, depositing an RBI and a run scored. Mihaliak was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while Cooper went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.
Maryville (7-15, 4-8 USA South) will face off with Methodist University on the MC Softball Field tomorrow, March 28. First pitch is slated for noon.
