Box Score The Maryville College men's soccer program claimed the 2015 Wilmington Kiwanis Classis title with a 4-0 shutout against Berea College on Sunday afternoon.
Junior forward Caleb Lucas found Cody VanKerschaever for the eventual game-winner at the 11:18 mark. The Scots out shot the Mountaineers 12-3 in the first half with Berea keeper Noah DeHart turning away four shots on goal. Two minutes past VanKerschaever's goal, Lucas stole the ball at the 30 and took the ball down the side for an unassisted goal, his fourth of the season.
Leading 2-0 at the half, Maryville continued their aggressive offensive attacks with a 15-1 shot advantage. Berea tallied nine saves in the closing period, but the constant pressure resulted in an own goal by the Mountaineers at the 75th minute. Just before the final minute, MC's James Bedwell found Bret Thomas for his second goal of the season to make the final score 4-0.
Maryville's Jon Taylor earned the win and shutout in net turning away a pair of shots on goal in 90 minutes. The Scots out shot Berea 27-4 during the non-conference challenge.
Caleb Lucas, Cody VanKerschaever, Jon Taylor, and Thomas Palmer were each named to the All-Tournament team, helping the Scots to a 4-1 overall record.
MC will now prepare to challenge the University of the South (Sewanee) on Tuesday. The Scots will host the Tigers with an 8:00 p.m. first kick.
