Box Score The Maryville College Scots opened their 2016 USA South season with a huge win over Methodist University on Saturday, 52-13.
With the win, the pre-season No. 2 Scots now control their own destiny. Huntingdon – picked as the conference's top team – fell on Saturday, 41-31, at the hands of N.C. Wesleyan College. The Scots host Huntingdon on Nov. 5 at 1:30 p.m.
Maryville plays the Battling Bishops that upended the Hawks next Saturday on Honaker Field at 1:30 p.m.
Maryville's Nick Myers led the way for the Scots, going 22-of-41 through the air for 239 yards and three touchdowns. The senior was 7-of-8 for 136 yards, scoring all three of his touchdowns in the first quarter after only missing his first pass of the day.
Juwan Hill (3 for 47 yards), Gianni Montgomery (1-40) and Mac Seagle (2-35) recorded scores, while Logan Winders led the receiving corps with five catches for 52 yards.
Elijah Chenier had 10 carries for 62 yards, while Trenton Shuler had 13 carries for 48 yards.
Shuler played in his first game since Sept. 10, 2015. Shuler scored a 3-yard touchdown after battling back from a nagging injury that occurred early last season.
Donaven Wise went 33 yard on five carries for a touchdown.
Maryville opened up the scoring with 6:30 left on the clock. Myers, a senior, missed his first pass of the quarter, before hitting Michael Smith for 30 yards. Myers went 5-for-6 on the drive, before hitting Seagle for 27 yards and a touchdown. Alex Willard's kick sailed true, as the Scots led 7-0.
MC scored again, just 1:13 later. The Scots had a pooch kick that was recovered by Maryville on the Methodist 29-yard line. A Monarch personal foul moved them to the 14-yard line, and the Scots would only need two plays. After a penalty, Myers found Hill for a 22-yard touchdown, as Maryville would lead 14-0 with 5:17 left in the first quarter.
After a Methodist punt, Maryville made the advantage again. The Scots used a six-play, 78-yard drive with the majority on Shuler's back. Myers completed the drive with a 40-yard touchdown pass to Montgomery. Willard's kick gave Maryville a 21-0 lead with 1:01 left in the first quarter.
Methodist would put together its own scoring drive entering the second quarter. The Monarchs needed only six plays to cover 69 yards in 1:22. E'Mond Brown rushed the final 2 yards, as Maryville led 21-7 with 14:32 left in the first half.
MC struck back with 11:02 left in the first half. The Scots used a 10-play, 66-yard drive to find pay dirt, as Shuler finished the final 5 yards. His touchdown rush of 3 yards is his first since East Tennessee State University game, after he returns to action after an injury. Maryville led by 21, 28-7, halfway through the first quarter.
The defense got into the action with 8:49 left in the first half, as Pierre Chadwick found his first interception of the season. The speedster had five blockers around him, as he returned it 86 yards to the touchdown, as Maryville led 35-7.
The Scots got the ball right back, as Gio Douyon fell on Willard's pooch kick – the second the Scots were able to recover in the contest. With 5:54 left in the first half, Willard notched a 29-yard field goal to give Maryville took complete control, 38-7.
Methodist was threatening on the 5-yard line with 12 seconds left in the first half. Methodist's quarterback Xavier Adams tried a jump pass, but Markel Kea stepped in front of the ball for the interception to give Maryville a 38-7 lead at the break.
Maryville would open the second half with their sixth touchdown of the day. Wise finished a 12-play, 86-yard drive with a 24 yard rush up the middle. Willard's kick sailed true, as Maryville led 45-7 with 11:11 left in the third quarter.
Special teams scored next for the Scots. Eddie Burton blocked Matt Brown's punt, as Burton found the ball in the end zone. The Score gave Maryville a 52-7 lead with 14:14 left in the contest.
Methodist added their second score of the day to complete an eight-play, 58-yard drive. Adams found Valdani Bastien for a 19-yard score, but Landon Cheviron's extra points missed. Maryville led 52-13 with 7:31 left in the fourth quarter.
That would prove the final, 52-13.
