Scots attack Cougars for 7-1 USA South victory

Behind a pair of Cody VanKerschaever goals, Maryville College cruised to their seventh consecutive victory by the score of 7-1 over USA South foe Averett University on Friday evening.

The junior midfielder lit up the scoreboard first in the 27^th minute when he gathered a rebound and deposited an unassisted goal into the lower left of the net.

Senior Tim Baker found VanKerschaever eleven minutes before the half on the far left of the box. VanKerschaever took the touch pass and blasted a shot into the right corner for the eventual game-winner.

At the intermission, Maryville out-paced the Cougars by the score of 2-0 behind a 9-3 shot advantage.

MC's offense went into overdrive in the second period peppering the Cougar keeper with 16 shots.

Nine minutes into the second half, Caleb Lucas took a rejected header and sent his 16^th goal of the season into the lower right of the net.

Nineteen minutes later, Tim Baker collected his second assist of the afternoon and 13^th dish of the season with a cross feed to senior Hayden Puryear. Puryear sent a goal from the middle of the box past Cougar keeper Austin Bramhall.

At the eight minute mark, Averett's keeper came out to play Kory Yarlett's attack and he pushed an assist to Michael Quatrano for his fourth goal of the season.

Just two minutes later, Quatrano fed a cross to Thomas Palmer where Palmer headed a pass to Andrew Sullivan for Sullivan's fourth goal of the season to make the score 6-0.

With two minutes left in the game, MC's David Deacon took a corner kick and connected for his first goal of the season.

As the clock wound down, Averett's Tobias Andreasson placed a Phillip Marklund pass past MC keeper Luke Wheat for his fifth goal of the season.

The victory sends the first place Scots to 11-2 overall and 6-1 in USA South play. Averett University falls to 6-10 and 5-4 in league play.

Maryville will host William Peace University on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. Pre-match festivities will honor Scots seniors Kory Yarlett, Caleb Lucas, Tim Baker, Hayden Puryear, and Thomas Palmer.
